A compact landscape project with powerful impact and a distinctive character
From Neglect to Vibrancy
As part of Office Park EXPO 2000, a neglected and non-functional green area has been transformed into a dynamic social space – a small but distinctive project that demonstrates how good design can change the perception of a place, even on a limited scale. Within an exceptionally compact area, three distinct recreational zones were created, each with its own character yet unified by modern design and natural materials – stone, wood, and metal. These elements lend an organic aesthetic and evoke a sense of connection with nature. The site’s elevation differences were resolved through terracing and the use of gabions, which serve a dual purpose as both retaining walls and seating. Complemented by ambient LED lighting, they create a welcoming atmosphere after sunset.
Functional Elements with an Aesthetic Touch
Concrete pavers with grass joints guide the movement through the space and create a paving pattern with a sense of ease and rhythm, while picnic tables introduce an informal element that encourages longer stays, outdoor work, or spontaneous meetings. Specially designed lighting highlights the newly planted trees, which over time will enrich the green framework of the space. The existing retaining wall has been visually refined with linear concrete accents, giving it a crisp, finished look that feels both modern and harmonious.
Sustainability and Harmony in a Compact Space
The planting composition combines evergreens, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses, offering a rich variety of textures and seasonal dynamics. Carefully selected forms and color nuances create the impression of a living garden in harmony with the natural rhythm of the seasons, while ensuring easy maintenance and long-term resilience. Despite its compact scale, the space impresses with a coherent concept, functionality, and thoughtful ideas. It becomes a natural extension of the working environment – a place for relaxation, focus, informal conversations, and recharging.
The project is a striking example of how an intelligent approach and attention to detail can create value, quality, and a sense of comfort even in the most unexpected places.
