River Park Sofia

Where landscape and architecture are harmoniously blended to create a living environment that places nature at the heart of everyday life.

Life in Harmony with Nature
The overall vision for the open spaces in River Park Sofia is to recreate a natural environment and harmonious landscape. The forms and design are inspired both by the gentle lines of the mountain and river, and by the dynamics of the city. In this way, the complex becomes a home for both people and nature – a place to live, relax, and enjoy life in a clean and healthy environment. This is achieved through extensive and efficiently landscaped areas that combine aesthetics with diverse social, wellness, and ecological functions. The foundation of the landscape concept lies in several green corridors, oriented mountain–city, positioned along the periphery, the central pedestrian pathways, and the street network.

Living Green Corridors
The green corridors along the edges of the complex are designed to be densely forested with a variety of tree species, creating the immersive feeling of a natural forest. This forested environment is wild yet peaceful, providing a setting suitable for everyday recreation while fostering a strong connection between residents and nature through its rich variety of colors, forms, and textures. The vegetation is carefully selected not only for its beauty but also for its ecological function, creating a dynamic, ever-changing landscape throughout the year. These corridors play a critical environmental role, improving air quality, retaining water, providing shade, and moderating temperatures on sunny days. They also serve as a buffer, isolating the complex from urban noise and dust from the nearby ring road. Predominantly local species from the slopes of Vitosha—oak, hornbeam, sycamore, ash, birch, common spruce, and white pine form the backbone of the planting. To enhance biodiversity, bird feeders and “hotels” for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are integrated, creating a thriving habitat for wildlife within the complex.

Planting Design and Ecological Value
The vegetation within the complex features a rich mix of trees, ornamental shrubs, grasses, and perennials, arranged in asymmetrical mixed borders that evoke the movement of a river. Tree clusters are positioned to preserve panoramic views of the mountains and the city. Private garden spaces for each residential unit are separated by hedges and a combination of trees, shrubs and perennial plants, creating an intimate and peaceful atmosphere while maintaining both a visual and ecological connection to the shared green areas. Once again, predominantly native species are combined with plants of distinctive ornamental qualities, providing food and shelter for birds, butterflies, and bees, and shaping a dynamic, healthy ecosystem landscape throughout the year. Upon completion, the complex will host over 3,000 trees and around 100,000 smaller plants.

Spaces for Play, Sport and Relax
The site's natural features and terrain have been skillfully incorporated into the complex's overall composition. A river runs along its boundary, around which a barbecue area and a social garden have been established for growing vegetables, herbs, and fruit trees, furnished with natural materials such as wood and stone. The central pedestrian walkways and internal streets connect various zones for active and passive recreation, including sports facilities, playgrounds, outdoor fitness areas, jogging routes, garden chess zones, small wooden obstacles and play elements providing physical challenges for all ages, as well as a dog-walking area, secluded with tree and shrub vegetation. Comfortable outdoor furniture and sun loungers allow for relaxation and sunbathing in the park-like environment.

Gardens of Privacy and Beauty for Every Family
Each residential unit is provided with its own private garden, offering an intimate and cozy setting – an ideal place for family meals, a space for creativity, play, or relaxation. These gardens are thoughtfully separated from the communal green areas and from one another through a combination of living hedges, ornamental shrubs, perennials, and climbing plants, ensuring both privacy and a rich, aesthetic environment. The entrances to the houses are highlighted with evergreen vegetation and complemented by flowering and aromatic plants that welcome residents and guests with a sense of harmony and beauty. Like the rest of the complex, the private gardens are filled with diverse plant species of high decorative value, carefully selected in smaller sizes to preserve open space and allow panoramic views of the mountains, the city, and the surrounding “borrowed” landscape. In this way, every family enjoys its own personal green sanctuary – beautiful, functional, and in perfect harmony with nature.

A project that stands out with its seamless blend between home, nature, and city.
