6TRAM BOXPARK

6TRAM BOXPARK is developed on the Boxscape platform. The chosen site is example for wasted controversial public space.
About the site
Located in the central part of Sofia, the site occupies a key urban zone bordering a busy intersection, a shopping center, and a public park. The area consists of a tram corridor separated from the main traffic lanes. Currently, it is a neglected space without function or benefit to the public — despite its great potential and strategic location. The tram line has been out of operation for several years, and its future use remains uncertain and contested. Meanwhile, the existing infrastructure is deteriorating, generating dust pollution, while the hard surface of the tracks accumulates significant heat during the warmer months.

The Idea
The 6TRAM BOXPARK project aims to reorganize the existing space, revealing its potential by transforming it into a green social hub. This implies both visual and functional change. The main structural components will be the BOXSCAPE units, shaping flexible spaces for gathering and relaxation. The primary zones are structured through modules with urban vegetation and a natural buffer provided along the street front. The newly formed areas are designed with pavements that continue the level of the existing sidewalks, ensuring accessibility and a natural widening of the adjacent pedestrian and square spaces. In this way, the design achieves a seamless integration between urban dynamics and green environment, fostering social interaction and a sense of belonging.

More About The Idea
The revitalization of the section will create a modern, accessible, and attractive urban space that meets the recreational and aesthetic needs of residents and visitors. The intervention aims to provide social, ecological, and economic benefits by enriching the urban environment and improving quality of life. The proposed improvements and innovations include the functional separation of the square area from the busy intersection to enhance safety and comfort. The space will serve as a meeting and transit area, complemented by comfortable seating zones for rest and waiting. The redesign of the existing bus stop includes the addition of a shelter with seating, an expansion of the passenger area, and the introduction of vegetation to reduce the negative impact of traffic and noise. The goal is to create a space for sharing and exchanging ideas that fosters community interaction and can adapt and transform according to different contexts.

More About The Idea
The conceptual design is based on a comprehensive visual and spatial transformation that will give the area a renewed identity and character. It explores the possibility of creating a bicycle hub – a zone for rental and repair services that promotes active mobility. The proposed natural green buffer provides separation between pedestrian walkways and the road, reducing noise and air pollution from vehicles. The concept also includes an educational zone titled “Touch and Think,” aimed at fostering knowledge about nature in the city and green infrastructure. A key focus is the creation of dynamic social spaces that act as catalysts for ideas, dialogue, and civic engagement, along with a zone for cultural events and exhibitions that supports artistic expression and the promotion of contemporary art.

Developed with the BOXSCAPE SYSTEM, 6TRAM showcases flexibility and potential – a transformable urban space that adapts seamlessly without affecting the tram line.
